Why Do I Write What I Do?
It's not about the money, it's because I care
Anyone who is familiar with my newsletter knows I write primarily about politics and social issues. On occasion, I will write about something completely different that moves me at the time. I’ve been writing online for over 15 years, on a variety of platforms. But why do I write, especially about the topics I write about?
When I first started writing, I created a travel blog, explaining how I came to retire and move to Malaysia. I wrote to kill time and possibly make a little money. I did manage to kill some time, but I sure in hell didn’t make any money.
After moving back to the US with my Malaysian husband, I became more interested in writing about politics and social issues. I became more aware of the forces in our country who did not want my husband and me to have the same rights as they did. I could not sit idly by and watch right-wing political groups and religious groups seek to destroy my marriage and deny me my basic human rights, solely because I love someone of the same sex.
With the entrance of Donald Trump on the country’s political stage, I saw more than gay people being attacked. Trump’s presidency allowed the bigoted and racist scum of the earth to emerge from the bowels of the earth to spread their white supremacist hate. I saw that this is not what the United States of America is supposed to be, according to our Bill of Rights and other parts of the Constitution, and who we are striving to be. I realized, back in 2016, that Donald Trump and his MAGA movement wanted to destroy the country I knew and loved.
I saw a corrupt and far-right SCOTUS go against the will of the American people and rob the women of this country of the right to control their reproductive rights. After Biden was elected, I saw a Trump-led and MAGA-backed attempt to overthrow the government. They didn’t succeed at first, but with Trump’s second, but in my opinion, doubtful election, the insurrection is quickly coming to a successful end.
I can see Trump and his favorite Nazi, Stephen Miller, trampling on the Constitution and ignoring the courts and rule of law, to fulfill the goals of Project 2025 ushering in a white Christian nationalist oligarchy as our next form of government. In this new government, there will be no room for the LGBTQ community, non-Christians, strong women, and people of any color other than white.
I am only one person, but as the protests on No Kings Day proved, together we can fight back. That’s why I am writing. I want to inform those who are willing to listen that we are in grave danger of losing our democracy, our rights, and freedoms. We all, in our own way, must fight this fascist movement now, or it will be too late. There are many uneducated and uninformed people, who share Trump’s hate, who will fight us every step of the way, not realizing that their heads will be on the chopping block after Trump’s Nazis are through with gays, Democrats, people of color and immigrants.
As I have said previously, I don’t make any money writing, but that is not the purpose of my writing. Before coming to Substack, I wrote on Medium. My articles were lost in the abyss. Either no one was interested in what I was saying, they didn’t care, or Medium would not allow my articles to be seen. The same articles I have published on Substack garnered hundreds of views, while on Medium, there would be 2 or 3 , if I were lucky.
That is why I write what I do on Subsack, and not Medium. It is more important for me to be seen and heard than to make a ton of money, even though a few dollars would be nice. I guess you could say that I write about what is important for me and for those I care for. I write because I care.
