Enjoy Your Labor Day and Remember Those Responsible for What You Have
For it could all change under this regime.
Here’s another American holiday where I don’t feel the old enthusiasm that I used to. But I am celebrating anyway, in hopes we will still have some thing to celebrate in the future.
This Labor Day weekend, we should honor the workers and labor unions who fought to make so much possible. Thanks to their efforts, we now have the forty-hour workweek, child labor laws, a minimum wage, workers’ rights, paid holidays, workplace safety regulations, unemployment insurance, and so much more.
We can thank Democrats and leaders like FDR for many of the rights we enjoy today. It’s also worth remembering that Republicans consistently opposed these measures, choosing instead to side with big business.
Now these long fought for rights are being eroded. Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Governor of Arkansas, has led the way in rolling back child labor laws. Republican states are vigorously attacking labor unions, as well as Donald Trump, a man who never did an honest day’s work in his life.
Thanks to Trump, the cost of food and other everyday necessities has skyrocketed, driven by his tariffs and economic mismanagement. Since taking full control of the government, Trump and the Republicans in Congress have consistently acted in the interests of the wealthy, doing nothing to support the middle and working classes.
While the salaries of millionaire CEOs have soared year after year, wages for the average American worker have barely budged. We’re now teetering on the edge of a recession, and with Trump’s mass deportation of migrant workers, prices and unemployment are poised to climb even higher. If you haven’t yet felt the impact of his disastrous policies, brace yourself—you soon will.
As you enjoy your grilled hot dogs and burgers with a couple of beers, take a moment to remember those who fought for the rights and benefits you enjoy today—and remember that your current Republican leaders are working hard to take them all away.
Have a wonder, happy, and safe Labor day weekend.
